Fantastically connected to the public transport network, Plumage is nevertheless a quiet place that isn’t overly hampered by its position slightly out of the centre. It gets tonnes of natural light, aided by the layout, and the interior has clearly been thought through – there’s a definite coherence to the space. It might not be quite as luxurious as some of the more expensive places, but the value on offer is hard to beat.

Home truths

The flat is very open – there aren't many doors between rooms, including the bedrooms

There's no espresso machine, just a moka pot

If the flat is full, seven guests would have to share two bathrooms

Two guests will be on beds in the living room

You'll be close to the Vatican and the metro, but it's a bit of a trek to the centre

About Valle Aurelia

Valle Aurelia is directly behind the Vatican, but you’d never guess from the number of tourists. Perhaps the nickname, Valle dell’Inferno (Valley of Hell) is enough to put them off. Rest assured though, it’s not a comment on the place, rather a reference to the presence of enormous furnaces in the area, which were in use up until the 1920s. It was the heart of metalworking, clay firing and brickmaking in Rome for centuries, and this instilled a vibrant working-class character to the neighbourhood, which endures today.

Host

This home is managed by Luca

This home is managed directly by a business. A member of their staff will be your point of contact before and during your stay. Luca rents out this house and a couple of others around the city. It takes up enough time to be a full-time job, and he’s been doing it for years so knows the score. Together with his wife, he decorated the places himself and you can tell there’s a personal touch.

This home is a Plum Guide Award winner.
