Nestled in the heart of Atocha, Honeycomb & Teal charms with its understated elegance. The exposed brick walls are a welcome contrast to the contemporary fittings and furnishings, and the well preserved-wooden beams in the bathroom add a touch of character. We particularly loved the bedroom's geometric blue headboard and the sweet kitchen floor tiles. Aside from the four bar stools in the kitchen, it's a bit of a pity that there's no dedicated dining table. You're in a great area, though – brimming with museums, well-tended gardens and, of course, great tapas bars.

Home truths
With a total of seventy-four wooden steps to climb to the apartment on the fourth floor and no lift, it's not suitable for wheelchair users
As three of the windows face an interior courtyard, there isn't a great amount of natural light
There are no windows in the master bedroom so it could feel stuffy to some
There's only one proper bedroom, so the third guest would be on a sofa-bed in the living room

About Madrid
Sometimes overlooked for its coastal competition, Madrid is the beating heart of Spain in both geography and historic charm. Madrileños are welcoming and friendly but sophistication circulates the warm Iberian air. The Prado Museum draws big crowds who flock to pore over works by the Spanish masters Goya, El Greco and Velázquez. Then unwind in the 350 acres of Buen Retiro Park that was the playground of the Spanish monarchy...
