Situated in a late 19th-century building across from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, this apartment has a sense of that traditional grandeur, albeit with a bit of modern flair. Inside you'll find high ceilings and large windows overlooking the Piazza, as well as a roomy living area and homely kitchen with everything you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast. Bookworms will adore the floor-to-ceiling bookcase packed with plenty to read – there's even a rolling ladder to reach the top – and everyone will enjoy dinners around the rustic table. After a busy day, pour yourself a glass of local vino and unwind with a soak in the rolltop bathtub. When it's time for bed, nod off in either of the stylish bedrooms – the second is on a mezzanine over the study, and though the ceilings are a little low, the cosy loft setting makes it our favourite. Termini is a multi-cultural neighbourhood with a diverse population, so you'll find a mix of ethnic eateries and traditional neighbourhood trattorias on your doorstep. Shop for international ingredients and fresh produce at Esquilino market, wander over the Colosseum – about a twenty-minute stroll – and to head further into the city, hop on the subway at Vittorio Emanuele station, just two minutes away.

Home truths
At full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room
The second bed is on a mezzanine overlooking the study, so the ceiling is very low
Unfortunately, there isn't any air conditioning, and the mezzanine bedroom can get pretty warm during the summer months
The location's convenient for public transport, but there aren't any of the major sights nearby – we didn’t mind, as this neighbourhood has its own charm
A cot and highchair can be provided for little ones
