Not all French chateaux, however grand, were owned by kings - this one was. Between 1494-1547 this impressive home, set on 20 acres of green parkland, belonged to King Francis I and though much of the house was rebuilt around 1860, some of the rear and side entrances date back to this period. It's also in the heart of France's standout culinary regions; Lyon, Burgundy and Auvergne are each within a two hour's drive, and a host of renowned vineyards are a matter of miles away. The world-famous Troisgros restaurant - which has held its three Michelin stars for 50 years - is in nearby Roanne. If food isn't your thing, there are golf courses aplenty nearby, not to mention historic villages, walks and, during the winter, skiing and snowboarding facilities.
