In the idyllic coastal village of Walberswick, we'd love to come home to this cosy cottage with sprawling gardens everyday. Wisteria twists above the doorway in true cottage style and stepping inside, you’re greeted with armchairs and sofas set around a wood-burning stove in the living room. It's perfect for families who relish long barbecue sessions under the clear summer skies or want to snuggle by the Inglebrook with a board game or two (the shelves are packed with them). The kitchen holds a particular charm with pastel clapboard like the inside of a beach hut and a vintage oven. A sunny conservatory looks out over the huge garden, with a lawn for kids (or dogs) to run around and outdoor dining on the patio. Walberswick is best known for its strong fishing heritage (which explains the excellent seafood) and diverse wildlife. What slips under the radar are the lovely tea rooms, restaurants, galleries and local shops. Come summer, join the famous crabbing spree at the harbour or stroll down the beach, which is less than a five-minute walk away.

Home truths

The hot water might run out if lots of people take showers in a row

With two bedrooms on the floor above, this is not a home for guests who do not like stairs

The oven is a vintage piece and doesn't work as efficiently as modern ovens

This place is very dog-friendly, with spare leads, towels and brushes in case you forget

There's a lovely pub within easy walking distance, but bring a torch if you're walking back after dark

The third bedroom has two sets of bunk beds so is only really suitable for children

About Southwold

Visiting Southwold as a child is an experience you’ll never forget, and you’re unlikely to as an adult either. The pier, with its traditional pavilion, might look like any other late-Victorian pier from the outside, but it’s a must-visit in this seaside town. What makes Southwold Pier different is its arcade of humorous, quirky, coin-operated machines. Created by the inventor Tim Hunkin, they feature a range of eccentric – and...
