This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay.

Home truths

The included toiletries aren’t particularly special so do bring your own

There’s no welcome pack so do make sure you bring cooking basics

Although the capacity for the property is six (including one sofa bed), we’d recommend four adults at maximum

The property is spread over three floors and stairs are steep and narrow. Not suited to wheelchair users or those with limited mobility

The only dining space is at the kitchen island, which seats three comfortably and three more at a pinch

It would be useful to have a car but there’s no parking at the property so you'll have to use a nearby car park

Please be aware that there might be occasional street noise

Sitting pretty between the rolling South Downs and the English Channel lies Chichester, the jewel of the south coast’s crown. Start your trip by wandering the city centre’s well-preserved Georgian streets, which join together in a cross by the elegant cathedral, best-known for its stunning 12th-century carvel panels. There are plenty of independent shops, restaurants and cafes to explore here (we particularly love the boutiques on the Pallant’s tangle of...
