From the whitewashed cottages to the sheltered harbour, Staithes has been an important fishing village for centuries, and this cottage embraces the idyllic vibe of the village. Evidence of its fishing life is still all around – from seafood at the ocean-battered pub, The Cod and Lobster, to the restored wooden steps and rope bannister of this home. The old cottage has been upgraded with modern luxuries; there's a deep roll-top bath for soaking, a wood-burner in the top-floor lounge, and a pizza oven in the kitchen. The real highlight is the terrace facing directly over the North Sea, with the adjacent wild-flower hillside adding a wash of colour in summer. The cliff-surrounded beach of Staithes is a short stroll, and fossils can be found on walks along the sand. For swimming and bathing, we love Sandsend beach, a 20-minute drive away. Whitby is also less than 20 minutes away by car and is full of eccentricities.

About Saltburn-by-the-Sea

A wooden pier juts out into the sea from Saltburn’s long sweep of sandy beach, and a rainbow of beach huts curl around the sand. On the Yorkshire Coast, this seaside town was a favourite of Victorian holidaymakers and still retains a hint of traditional charm. A chocolate box tram trundles up the cliffside, and the beach consistently features on “Best Beaches in Britain” lists. Thrill-seekers can hit waves fit...
