Stake out your own little patch of the Welsh countryside with this lovely lodge, built in a similar style to the grand Plas Dinam country house on whose grounds it stands. This is prime rambling territory, with options for scenic walks along the River Severn and cresting the surrounding hills. Or, when your feet need a rest, visit the independent shops and eateries in the village of Llanidloes, ten minutes away by car. Back at home, you'll find a cosy lounge, separate dining area and huge kitchen, so there's plenty of space to make yourself comfortable. We love the wooden and stone flooring, not to mention the roomy master bedroom upstairs, which has an enviable clawfoot bath perfect for soaking sore muscles after a long walk. On cooler days, curl up by the wood-burning stove while something sweet bakes in the Smeg oven, best enjoyed with a cup of tea or a Nespresso coffee around the dining table. Or, when the weather is nice, take your treats out to the courtyard, basking in the tranquil scenery.

Home truths

Two dogs are welcome, but there's a £20 per dog/per stay fee – the lodge is also next to a main road, so be sure to keep them on a leash while outside

The stone floor in the kitchen can get cold, so remember to pack some slippers

A travel cot and high chair can be provided on request

There is some traffic noise from the main road, but it quietens down at night

The clawfoot bathtub is directly in the master bedroom, so there's no privacy when using it

Bedroom three can be arranged as two single beds or one king-sized bed

We suggest having a car – there's parking for two cars on-site

The main house is an event venue, so when in use, you'll be able to hear music and other noise
