Built in the 12th century, this beautiful Chianti home has history seeping from its pores. Think original beams, exposed stone walls and a selection of carefully placed artefacts. We love the rustic scalloped ceiling in the lounge and the terracotta floor that runs throughout the house, so a stay here means basking in the traditional farmhouse style. No doubt you’ll spend most of your time outside, lazing on loungers by the pond with a book, or soaking up the sweeping views of the Italian countryside. The market town of Gaiole is a ten-minute drive away with all the shops you could need for supplies (including some of that famous Chianti red). If you fancy a taste of city life, further afield is spectacular Siena with its gothic architecture and artisanal boutiques – but you may well find that once you drive down the unmade road to your Italian escape, you never want to leave.
