Built in 1850, this beautiful traditional Istrian stone house in the village of Bale was completely renovated in 2017. As we walked through the old, ornate front door, flanked by olive trees in pots, we realised that the inside completely contrasts with the charming, old façade. Think steel open tread staircases and wood-style floors, although there are a few nods to the past here and there with the exposed stone walls and beams in the bedrooms, which we love. Whip up some buzara (mussels in a wine broth) in the modern kitchen for lunch. There’s a playroom with a kitchenette on the top floor too – this place is ideal for a family or friends. Once you’ve explored this delightful hilltop village with its medieval streets, head to Rovinj, 14 kilometres away. For a day at the beach, there are several to choose from within five kilometres, including Marić Beach.

About Istria

Croatia’s northern peninsula, jutting out into the cool blue of the Adriatic Sea, has been a traveller favourite for decades. The region’s capital, Pula, is home to an ancient Roman amphitheatre, as well as family-run restaurants serving rustic fare from the hillside farmsteads around Istria and delicious local wines from the region’s vineyards. The coast is dotted with swimming platforms and rocky outcrops to stretch out on after a dip...
