Set in vast grounds with pine trees and wild olives, this dreamy home has direct access to the clear waters of the bay and a tiny, white-pebble beach. A secluded and romantic retreat, well off the beaten tourist track, it's a traditional villa that's been owned by the same family since 1879. With incredible sea views, a lush, green setting and bags of character, it's picture-perfect. Recently renovated, this stone-built home is set across three levels, with an elegant living room opening to a country kitchen with an imposing open fire and a chandelier over the large dining table. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spread across the top two floors, with a superb master suite in the loft room, complete with a dramatic vaulted ceiling. But we have a feeling you'll be spending most of your time outside here, and this place has terraces and views to die for. Eat alfresco at the covered dining spot, relax in the outdoor lounge area with evening drinks or bask in the sunshine by the pool – which is one of the best we've seen in the area. And it's just a few minutes' walk down to the beach each morning for a swim in the crystal-clear sea.

Within the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, sand-hued buildings with orange rooftops jut out into the azure sea. That’s not the only pearl Croatia is hiding. Split has the narrow, timeworn streets of Diocletian’s Palace to rival Dubrovnik’s old town, and sparking...
