It might seem like a strange place to start, but Ensign’s kitchen is quite remarkable. Of course, not everyone will appreciate the over-the-top design, but the commitment is undeniable. All in all, it comes together well, with a real sense of playfulness. It’s small enough that long-term stays might end with you feeling a bit cooped up, but for shorter stays, it’s more than enough.

About San Siro
Unsurprisingly, this area of Milan revolves around the stadium (which gets its nickname from the neighbourhood, rather than the other way round). If you’re in town for the football, there’s nowhere better to stay, though matchdays and the corresponding crowds will test the patience of anyone less inclined towards sport – 80,000 fans milling around changes the character somewhat. The area is served by two metro stops, on a line that runs directly into Garibaldi station, so even though it’s not very central, getting into the city is pretty simple.
