This fully restored castle in the Dordogne manages to merge the modern with the ancient. The stone foundations may date back as early as the 5th-century, but the interior is dotted with modern art and all the little luxuries of modern life. There's over 15 hectares of land to explore, with a swimming pool, terraces, and a barbecue area for al fresco dining. The castle backs on to the vineyards of Bergerac, so you're never too far from a glass of locally produced wine. Should the weather turn, the games room with a billiards table and library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves provide quality indoor entertainment.

Bright and open-plan, this lived-in home has a lot of character to it. Although the bedrooms are a little on the basic side, what really stood out for us was the colourful living space covered in Berber and Persian rugs – the perfect environment to curl up with a book. You're at the heart of trendy Neve Tzedek so be sure to try out some of the neighbourhood's most coveted eateries such as Dallal.

Click to book Tahoe Chronicler now: from £147.6 per night If you want to feel like you've travelled back in time, only without losing the comfort of the 21st century, this home will make the perfect Lake Tahoe escape. Nostalgic, quirky and spacious, it was once home to the reporters of the 1960's Olympics – check out the master bedroom for some memorabilia. There are fantastic features throughout, with some of our favourites being the vintage beams that once framed the rail tunnels on Donner Summit, the living-room rockery and the abundance of eclectic artwork. With so many cosy features, eye-catching design details and the feeling of seclusion among towering pine trees, you might find it hard to tear yourself away, but when you do, you'll find yourself a stone's throw away from the ski lifts and the Olympic Valley, with Lake Tahoe just a short drive further. Tucked away inside a typical Lisbon townhouse, this cute and characterful space is a delightful surprise. With a wooden Pombaline frame that transforms the communal area into a library, this home is an excellent option for an avid reader – the outdoor balcony will win over the rest with gorgeous views of the nearby botanical garden. While most visitors flock to the likes of Alfama and Bairro Alto, this stunning apartment is located in the heart of Principe Real. Admittedly, it's further away from the historical city centre, but its pastel-coloured mansion apartments and wide boulevards provide it with a charm all of its own. You'll find the enchanting ten-acre Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real within a five-minute walk. While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

This glowing home in the heart of the trendy Marais district is located just opposite the oldest Parisian market in the city, dating back to the I6th century – The Enfants Rouges. Similarly, in utterly charming fashion, the home's blue shelved walls are filled with an impressive home library collection of books, with rustic exposed beams overhead and warm industrial-style lighting throughout. So, whether you're whipping up a croque madame in the compact kitchen, brushing your teeth in front of the Venetian mirror, or snuggling down for bed, a book is never out of reach here. With heaps of character, homely touches and plenty of tales to be told, this cosy home reminds us of an old Parisian bookshop – it really is a bookworm's little pocket of paradise. Outside, a stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will have you passing hip bars, hidden art galleries and quaint coffee shops, while the Notre Dame sits just twenty-three minutes away (on foot). When – weary from perusing local bookshops and soaking up the rich culture – return to your own story keeper for a relaxing evening in.
