People will try and distract you with the story of Marcus Aurelius' column, which has stood in the centre of Piazza Colonna since at least 193 AD, but everyone really comes to Colonna for the shopping. The traditional golden plastered buildings are now home to forgettable restaurants and fantastic boutiques, that stock everything from international designers to local Italian artisans, world renowned masters in mens' tailoring, shoes and hats. In between visiting all the shops in the Galleria Alberto Sordi, take a moment to admire both the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Venezia which are visible from either end, before sneaking off for a delicious dinner at Osteria al Sostegno, and then perhaps a film at Cinema Nuovo Olimpia, a famous old cinema in whose foundations were found the ancient remnants of the Ara Pacis, and which often shows films in the original language.
