In Finland, going to the sauna has been elevated to a national pastime and this home provides the perfect opportunity for you to find out why. With your own outdoor hot tub and sauna inside, it’s the ultimate destination for some peace and pampering. Interiors are minimalist with flourishes of fur blankets and a cosy wood-burner, but then you don’t need much adornment when you’ve got windows opening up to those views over Lake Haukjärvi. Steps lead down to a little boat jetty out on the lake, for a spot of fishing or sunbathing, and there’s covered outdoor dining if you want to enjoy your catch of the day amidst the trees. Built in 1971 and still retaining some traditional, original features, this home has been recently renovated to create a cosy, compact cabin ideal for an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Set a few meters from the lake, this spacious and comfortable home in the Finnish wilderness is the perfect place to reset and enjoy spending time with family and friends. This quiet, sun-filled spot is surrounded by nature, but you have everything you need in this contemporary cabin, including a full kitchen, ample dining room and a huge U-shaped sofa. It may be peaceful, but you certainly won't be bored. Younger children will love playing on the swings and the lakeside beach, while the older kids can get competitive with the badminton set. During the winter months, the landscape around this cosy holiday home looks like something out of Narnia. Just minutes away from the piste, it's the ideal place to call home during a winter sports trip, and it makes an equally great base for vacations in the summer too.

Skiers can shred some powder at Valkealampi Ski Centre – it's just a 10km drive away from your front door. There are a lot of water sports to be enjoyed on the lake, as well as plenty of gorgeous nature walks in the surrounding woods. Drive to the coast for some spectacular dunes and islands.

In amongst the trees and the sandy and rocky outcrops that make up the shoreline of Finland’s Baltic coast, this beautiful apartment is an oasis of thoroughly modern comfort in a place that really takes you back to nature. You won’t need to travel far to get the most out of the local amenities in Kasnäs, with indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, mini-golf, and tennis courts just 300 metres away.

Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

This idyllic waterside home’s timeless interiors are inspired by nature, with pale wood tones and pops of forest greens. Thanks to the large picture windows, you can enjoy views through the trees and down to the water from almost every room. And of course, no Finnish abode would be complete without a sauna. This delightful wooden cottage has its own rowing boat, as well as a grill hut with views of the lake. Later on, stargaze from the outdoor Jacuzzi with a glass of Lakka liqueur. What’s more, there are plenty of skiing and snowshoeing opportunities during colder months – you may even spot the Northern Lights. You can also take a rowing boat out onto the lake, or visit the nearby Jyrkänkoski ironworks – it's just over half a kilometre away. And, after a long day of exploring, you can do as the Finns do and soothe your muscles with a session in your very own sauna.

Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. You're only a short walk away from Kuortaneenjärvi lake, allowing you to relax every single day as you watch the glistening waters – we recommend making a homemade picnic to enjoy here as the children play on the swing set. If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

Lakeside Lonkero

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

Go fully remote and get deep into the wood cabin vibes at this Finnish home. This lakefront house is surrounded by towering trees and scenic views, making this the perfect nature retreat to decompress and unwind. As if straight out of a movie set, the hanging chair, front yard patio, brick chimney and fire-engine-red exterior sets the picture-perfect scene. The interiors combine a mix of white furnishings with dark and light wood fixtures, maintaining the home’s rural identity. The country-chic kitchen is warmed by a traditional brick stove and the TV room is tucked away in a little nook. Made of ancient silver logs, this home emerges from between the quiet trees of the forest landscape as if it’s always stood there. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Just outside the Arctic city of Rovaniemi, this cabin sits in a patch of forest, surrounded by trees. It sits atop the Ounasvaara plateau, one of the best spots to witness the Northern Lights while remaining close to the city. Winter sports enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Olympic training centre, for ice hockey matches in winter and forest assault courses in summer.

It’s a traditional, Finnish-style cabin with the clapboard painted red on the outside and all pinewood inside. The ground floor is dedicated to a dine-in kitchen with a sofa for unwinding, where a wood-burning stove crackling away in the evening keeps things cosy. Tucked up in the A-frame loft space, you’ll find a second bedroom and lounge area with a TV. A wooden veranda lets you sit outside and listen to the sounds of nature around you.

Sure, you could head out into the snowy expanse of Finnish Lapland to hunt for the Northern Lights. Or, you could lay back in your big double bed and watch as the Aurora Borealis put on a spellbinding display above you. This igloo-style cabin has a glass roof, so you can keep an eye on the sky all throughout the night. Or, perhaps get the sunken hot tub bubbling outside and keep warm as you scan the sky. During the day, you can gaze out of picture-frame windows at the dense pine forests around you. It’s a soothing medley of ink-black and pinewood inside, reflecting the calm of the forest outside, and we love the Japanese onsen-style bathroom with its own sauna. 

You’re in the heart of Lapland, where the snowy landscape is a winter wonderland in the colder months. Hopping on a snowmobile, you can reach the lift to the ski slopes of Levi in five minutes and there’s a supermarket nearby too. The Arcandia Arctic Amusement park is also just a ten-minute shoop by snowmobile.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus. 

Silver Kelo

Make the most of the snow with endless days, skiing in Rukatunturi or snuggling up indoors at this classy home. The interior is stylish and refined thanks to the silver and grey tones; you also benefit from a fireplace and electric sauna so you’re never without warmth and comfort. Enjoy the views from the dining area over a family meal, or from the balcony as you savour the cool breeze. The ski area is a short walk away – you can reach it just by crossing the road. Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.

For guests with children, a little quiet time is just around the corner as the PlayStation 2 and its arsenal of games will keep the kids entertained.

Aside from that, we also like the minimalist kitchen with sleek white surfaces that are big enough for whipping up hearty feasts and the balcony that looks out to peaceful forest views. During the summer months, you can even fire up the gas barbecue in this space and dine alfresco.

Given that the home sits in the middle of a ski resort, the distance to the slopes is pretty important and thankfully, you can reach them in a little over five minutes' walk here.
