Part of a former 16th century farmhouse, this cute home in the Somerset countryside is perfect for a peaceful escape. Secluded and intimate, it has a homely vibe that's made for couples on a romantic getaway. 

A fireplace and wood burning stove create a cosy ambiance, supported by the low-vaulted wooden beams and comfy sofa. Whether you're visiting in the glorious months of summer or the romantic winter season, the living room is a snug place to settle with a cup of hot chocolate or tea.

If you do visit in the summer, you'll love dining alfresco on the table in the courtyard. Share toast in the mornings, complemented by a cup of coffee, before moving on to a glass of cava in the evenings. Picturesque and quiet, the only sounds you'll hear are the birds singing in the skies above. 

If you fancied spreading your legs further than the courtyard, you'll reach the award-winning pubs in Broadway in just a few minutes' walk. Slightly further up the road, the quaint town Ilminster can be reached in five minutes by car – here, you'll find coffee shops, vintage stores and inviting cafes.

Apple of our Eye

You’ll find this eccentric yet elegant home at the heart of Cheddar Valley. It boasts wonderful views from two furnished terraces – one even has a hot tub. There’s also an open-plan entertaining space with a feature fireplace and direct access to the upper terrace, so you can open the French doors and merge the indoor and outdoor spaces. There’s a games room with a pool table and wall pong, ideal for older kids. Young children will need to be closely supervised on the stairs as they’re on the steep side. 

Cheddar & Sage

This barn conversion is tucked away near the picturesque village of Burlescombe. Sitting within an International Dark Skies Reserve, you’ll be treated to starry skies on a clear evening – the bedroom even has a stargazing window so you can view the night sky from the comfort of the suspended bed. We love the characterful features here, like the hand-crafted sliding bedroom door and the oak breakfast bar. While the kitchenette is small, it’s got everything you need to whip up a light bite or snack, and for heartier meals, you’ll find a variety of cafes, pubs, and restaurants nearby. Location-wise, you’ve got the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Tiverton with its canals and castle, within easy driving distance.

Stargazing in Burlescombe

Escape to the country with a stay at this large home near Glastonbury. Surrounded by hills, gorges and moorland, the property is perfect for people who love a good walk. Cute market towns, such as Glasto and Bridgewater, add to the bucolic vibe. Recently renovated, the living room is cosy and bright, the bedrooms are light, and we love the large open-plan kitchen ¬– a great place to socialise with friends and family. Plus, the huge garden gets lots of sun in the afternoon. 

Festival House 

A beautiful amalgamation of 500 years of history, this stunning Somerset farmhouse and converted dairy spans the centuries. Stone floors run throughout the home – some old, some more recent – each documenting the evolution of this building over time. The garden pool is certainly a new addition, along with a dreamy pool house complete with changing rooms and a restorative steam room. On fine days, lounge out by the heated waters and enjoy a lazy alfresco lunch before treating yourself to a steam – plus, an automated cover keeps the pool at the ideal temperature all the time. The home itself is furnished in a contemporary farmhouse style with every detail attended to – offering a combination of cutting-edge modern spaces and a cosy cottage feel. The large kitchen is the heart of the home, with a beautifully restored AGA offering post-walk warmth on cold winter days. Of course, if you’d rather sprawl out on the couch, there’s plenty to choose from with their own wood burners to keep you warm. For spring and summer living, the kitchen conservatory is pretty remarkable – floor-to-ceiling sliding doors in the dining area open out onto the garden and rolling countryside. Upstairs, the impeccably styled bedrooms are decorated with floral print wallpaper, super-soft throws, and armchairs. The master bedroom even manages to fit an elegant freestanding bath alongside the dressing table – sneak away in the afternoons and take a blissfully relaxing soak. Outside, a terraced garden is spread over various levels, complete with a croquet lawn and even a mature woodland. If you’d like a break from country solitude, it’s just a twenty-minute walk to Babington House, perfect for Soho House club members to grab drinks, food and use the facilities. Otherwise, head into Frome, just a ten-minute drive away, with plenty of options for dining, shopping and sipping tea in town. 

Hancocks Farm

Nestled in North Cadbury, this farmhouse blends a charming mix of old and new. It’s the perfect place for a family get-together, with enough space for ten guests to spread out comfortably. Not only that, but there’s enough on-site entertainment here that you can have a true staycation and never leave home if that tickles your fancy. Generous gardens offer plenty of room for little ones to stretch their legs, while there will be games aplenty with pool, skittles, darts and table tennis available – there’s something for everyone here. 

The Hawker

Tucked away from the tumult of everyday life, this idyllic waterside retreat is set within an exclusive family estate and offers you a chance to relax and recharge.

A gorgeous multi-purpose living space opens up onto an over-water deck on the ground floor. You'll find a covered day bed for lazy days lounging in the sun, an outdoor dining table for lakeside lunches and a rowing boat bobbing nearby. 

Back inside, the compact kitchen is kitted out with everything you might need for a self-catered stay. At the same time, a spacious bathroom boasts a rainfall shower, stylish zellige tiles and a chandelier hanging over the freestanding Italian stone tub.

Ascend the spiral staircase up into the pitched roof, where your hosts have found space for a king-size bed. Waking up to the sound of birdsong as you look out across the lake is worth the price of admission alone.

Away from your lakeside haven, the increasingly cool town of Bruton is just a six-minute drive away – head here for an artistic air, independent boutiques and fancy places to eat. Alternatively, hike through the nearby hills to the 160ft-tall King Alfred's Tower for unparalleled views.

The Boathouse

A fifteen-minute drive from the beautiful city of Bath, this studio apartment sits within the grounds of an old Georgian house. In the quintessential country village of Wellow, you’ve got a pub and village shop on your doorstep. An old railway line turned walking path leads right into Bath for those that like a long ramble. Make the most of sunny days with barbecues on the private patio, and enjoy starry skies at night away from the bright lights of the city. Inside, it’s an old hayloft turned apartment with a full kitchen, sitting area, dining table and bed sharing the same area. But it feels spacious thanks to a lofty ceiling and the personal touches like a little library of books and welcome pack are appreciated.  

The Hay Loft

Located in the unspoilt hamlet of Benville (as once described by Thomas Hardy), this renovated cottage is ideally placed for a family retreat to West Dorset. Your host provides a starter pack with essentials like tea, coffee and biscuits, but if you need to stock up on extra bits, the village of Evershot also lies just two miles away. The charming location allows you to take in country views from just about every angle, while the inglenook fireplace serves as a lovely spot for unwinding after a lunchtime walk. Better still, you'll also have an outdoor dining patio and a garden to enjoy on warmer days. We recommend having a car here – you'll find private parking on the premises.

The Rambler's Retreat

Bursting with character, this Stogursey cottage is as cosy as it looks. On winter days, snuggle up in front of the log burner, while summer evenings call for sundowners in the quaint garden. Of course, with the traditional charm comes a few eccentricities, mainly the twisting staircase and low beamed ceilings. Scenic walking trails through the Quantock Hills are practically on your doorstep – perfect for strolls with the pups in tow. Further afield, Taunton and Glastonbury are within easy driving distance, offering fun for the whole family.

Rural Rendezvous

Dating back to the Elizabethan era, this grand manor in the Somerset countryside is said to have inspired one of Jane Austen’s fictional stately homes. Across five acres of gardens and woodland, you’ll find vast lawns, furnished patios, an old tennis court and riverside walks with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It’s palatial inside with four reception rooms – grand wood-panelled lounges, lavish sitting rooms and a dedicated office for those working remotely. The kitchen is fit for banquet-sized meals, and there’s room for 16 in the formal dining room. Bedrooms feel fit for nobility with sleigh beds and four-posters, but quite a few guests will be sharing in threes and fours at full capacity.   

Rowan & Thorn

This Victorian cottage was once a piggery, and though converted, still has original features. Situated on a farm, you’ll not only be surrounded by countryside, but you can buy free-range eggs and grass-reared meat from your neighbour – it’s a bucolic lifestyle here. Only children over fifteen are welcome to join you here, allowing for true R&R. A welcome pack is provided by your host, though you’ll also find a farm shop in the beautiful Hamstone village, North Perrott. The terrace is a particular highlight – and the perfect spot to unwind after country walks. Alternatively, enjoy a beach walk along the Jurassic Coast, a short drive away.
