On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Hergest Lee

Found in the gorgeous Herefordshire countryside, this one-story apartment struck us as a romantic retreat. The Juliette balcony and terrace both offer up views of the surrounding area, creating a pleasant backdrop as you tuck into breakfast – a perfect way to start a day of traversing the various walking trails nearby if you ask us. And while the building is shared with the owners, the private entrance ensures privacy here. Four miles away, you'll find necessities, fine dining and more in the picturesque village of Pembridge – also known as the 'black and white village' owing to its timbered buildings.

The romantic property is a sensitively renovated and professionally designed rural escape for couples in Herefordshire. The cozy living space boasts an elegant kitchen area equipped for intimate meals, a comfortable sitting area with original features and a wood burning stove, and French doors opening onto an ornamental Juliet balcony with far-reaching views. The bedroom features an inviting super-king size bed that can convert to twin single beds and a bright en-suite with a large walk-in shower. Guests can enjoy al-fresco dining or drinks on the private raised terrace while listening to birdsong and taking in hillside views. The property has direct access to the Mortimer Walking Trail and other rural walking and cycling routes. Nearby Pembridge offers historic inns, restaurants, shops, tea rooms, and farm shops. Other nearby attractions include the Stagg Inn, Ludlow, Hay-On-Wye, Presteigne, Kington Golf Course, Berrington Hall, Hampton Court Gardens, Croft Castle, Hergest Gardens, Ludlow Castle, Hereford Cathedral, Monkland Cheese Dairy, Dunkerton's Cider Mill and Leominster's antique shops.

The Nature's Path

With far-reaching views towards the Kerry Ridgeway, this 18th century barn conversion guarantees a restful and rejuvenating stay in the heart of the Welsh countryside. Inside, it’s homely and cosy – think original timber beams, exposed stone, squashy leather sofas and snug bedrooms in the rafters. Spend your mornings pottering around the fully-equipped kitchen, putting together a tasty Welsh-inspired breakfast to be enjoyed on the patio. 

When you’re ready to explore your surroundings, take the thirteen-minute drive to Llanfair Caereinion for the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. Or why not head south for twenty minutes to Newtown and check out the Robert Owen Museum and Oriel Davies Gallery before embarking on a scenic circular walk. Stop in at the Bull and Heifer on the way back to your abode for a slap-up dinner and a well-deserved tipple. 

Honey Bee Barn

Quiet and secluded, but just a fifteen-minute walk from popular Corris, this lovely lodge has been completely refurbished to create a comfortable rural home. The owners, James and Sophie, live up at the main house and they've put a great deal of care into it. Heated with a ground source heat pump, laid out using the rules of Feng Shui and designed to be as cosy and welcoming as possible, this place will appeal to keen cyclists, walkers and those of us who just want to escape for a bit. Surrounded by pine forest, with a river running opposite, it's in the Dyfi Valley, with the Dyfi bike park just a ten-minute drive. A traditional slate building, the inside is modern and practical. Cosy up on the sofas in front of the fire (a basket of logs is provided), cook in the smart kitchen and eat at the contemporary dining table – it's all one sociable space. There's a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with two more upstairs with sloping ceilings and skylights. In the summer, step out onto your patio with a cup of coffee each morning and just listen to the birds. A short walk away there's a public park – perfect for dog walks – and you can stroll into town to the cafe and pub.  

Fronwen Lodge

Gaze out over Cader Idris and the surrounding countryside from this charming mid-Wales cottage. Its location at the head of the Dyfi Estuary makes it perfect for those looking to get away from it all with friends or family while also offering easy access to the market town of Machynlleth, 4 miles away. Lined with local shops, captivating cafes and host to a local weekly market, there's plenty to see and do. 

While the town holds a special place in Welsh history as the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament, today, it is perhaps best known as the home of the Machynlleth Comedy Festival – a side-splitting celebration of all things hilarious held over a few days each spring.

With rolling green fields, an enclosed garden, and easy access to the mountains and the sea (the beaches of Cardigan Bay are 14 miles away), life here is all about embracing the outdoors – whatever the weather. After a day spent hiking through the hills or cycling along remote tracks that lead directly from your doorstep, you'll be embraced by the welcoming atmosphere of this home away from home and the promise of a warming fire.

Just For Laughs

With a stunning garden and vibrant interior, this cosy home is a great choice for those looking for a fun, relaxing getaway in Wales. Located just half a mile from the historic market town of Tregaron, you're well situated to explore the quaint villages, cliffs, beaches, and more of Cardigan Bay.

Large windows invite a lovely natural light to brighten this home beautifully. It's a cheerful place where future happy memories will come easily, whether you're chatting around the dining table with a glass of wine or watching a film with the fireplace warming you up. The kids will love it too – they have their own snug hideaway for playing games and reading books when the grown-ups are catching up.

We love the interior's vibrancy, but our favourite bit of this home is the impressive garden. The cute space has a Mediterranean feel, with a bistro table and salmon-pink walls. When you've returned home after a day of exploring the Cambrian Mountains and the coves of Cardigan Bay, you'll love hopping straight into the bubbling hot tub to soothe those muscles after a day on your feet. Surrounded by lush greenery and vast fields, it's pure bliss. Then, when it's time for dinner, will it be a fresh pizza from the log-fired pizza oven, grilled meats and vegetables from the barbecue, or both? 

Garden Serenity

Nestled deep within the foothills of the Radnor Forest, far from the madding crowds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere at this secluded Welsh idyll –⁠ which is just how we like it.

Inside, this 16th Century home has been lovingly converted with carefully curated vintage-style interiors. Exposed beams and cottage windows show the passage of time, while modern textiles and pops of colour bring a flare of modernity and a boutique-hotel feel. The bespoke shaker-style kitchen painted in a rich forest green makes preparing mealtimes a joy while your ensemble gathers around the charming kitchen table –⁠ there's room for you all.

With wood stacks by the fireplace in the cosy snug. A bookcase filled with classics. And outside, a quaint private garden for alfresco barbecues, and a babbling brook for company, you may have no desire to venture out. But really, you must. The mountainous landscapes are the perfect playground for walkers and nature-lovers. Take off into the Welsh wilderness to discover the region's famed waterfall, nicknamed Water-Break-its-Neck (a one-hour gentle stroll). 

And when thoughts turn to food, you're close to a great selection of eateries serving hearty British meals. The village of Old Radnor is just a short drive away, where you'll find an award-winning ancient longhouse inn serving Sunday lunches with unparalleled views across the Radnor Valley. 

Whinyard Rocks

Tucked away in a valley at the heart of the Black Mountains, this sprawling home is a dreamy countryside escape. The home is split between an old farmhouse, a cottage, and a studio-style barn, making it a marvellous choice for group getaways. It’s in a stunning location and offers absolute peace and quiet, as well as privacy. If you’re looking to go off-grid and surround yourself with nature, you’ll love this home. 

The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection. 


Serenity in the Black Mountains

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. If gazing out at the countryside vista inspires you to explore this beautiful county, you're well-placed for bird-spotting and long rambles, perhaps finished with a meal at The Stagg Inn, a well-praised gastropub that sits no more than two minute's walk from your front door.

Long-Eared Owl

With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.    

The Memory Jar

This stately manor sits on the outskirts of Dolgellau, offering market-town charm and nearby amenities in the Snowdonia National Park. A grand home for family get-togethers, this building steeped in political history, now serves as a contemporary retreat for the whole group – and your furry friends. A games room awaits, as well as outdoor seating spots and a hot tub in the garden. While the local shop a stroll away is a handy bonus, cars are necessary for visits to Cadair Idris mountain and hikes along the popular Mawddach Trail.

The Olde Abode

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.
