Surrounded by a fragrant garden and blessed with an uninterrupted view over the sea, this spectacular escape is tailor-made for magical stays when seemingly endless summer days span almost eighteen hours.

Built back in 1902 and painted in that iconic red hue that epitomises rural Sweden, this spacious and sprawling holiday home has maintained many of its original features over the proceeding century. When combined with its secluded island location, one of some 30,000 that make up the Stockholm archipelago, it's perfect for those seeking that all-too-rare feeling of disconnection from the frenetic pace of modern life.

Despite its remoteness, the house is just a few minutes by car or boat from the vibrant archipelago town of Vaxholm, with its tempting bakeries, fishmongers selling fresh seafood, a surprisingly international array of restaurants, plus supermarkets for stocking up on essentials. However, it's easy enough to maintain your island idyll should you want to.

With a private beach, a stunning sauna that looks out over the water, a private dock for jumping off afterwards, plus an expansive lawn for picnic lunches and outdoor games, why would you want to leave?

The Cuckoo's Nest

Sitting close to the coastline on one of the approximately 24,000 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, this address benefits from not only a private dock, but also a motor boat you can borrow to explore your surroundings a little further. Alternatively, if you're more than content to sit and admire it from afar, there are alfresco tables in the pretty garden from which to dine and gaze out at peaceful waters.

This being Scandinavia, there are certain points in the year in which you'll simply want to coop up inside and it's more than possible to get toasty and warm here. Not only are there wood-burning fireplaces dotted about the communal spaces, but there's also one in the spa-style bathroom, complete with a tub and relaxation area. We're also particularly fond of the homely design throughout, from the rustic kitchens and bright living spaces to the soft rugs underfoot.

Part of the beauty of this address is its sense of isolation and privacy, although this does mean you'll have to hop in the car and potentially on a ferry for restaurants and attractions. That being said, the host can arrange for a private chef to visit the home, which makes life easier somewhat.



Where the Magic Happens

Set in the leafy suburbs of Stockholm, this home offers perfect peace while still being within easy reach of the city. Open the door of this handsome wooden house and you'll find yourself in a bright space that's bursting with that quintessentially Scandi style. Despite its minimalism, there are still plenty of cosy touches, from the movie room, ideal for snuggling up with a blockbuster, to the wood-burning stove which provides a warming atmosphere as you share a meal at the long dining table. Outside, there's plenty of space to enjoy alfresco feasts cooked on the grill, and even your very own swimming pool – take a refreshing dip, or simply laze in the sun as you watch the kids splash about. There's also a tennis court and golf course close by, and a five-minute walk will bring you down to the nearby lake. This corner of paradise might make you forget that you're so close to the bright lights of Stockholm but, should you want to visit the cobbled streets of the old town, you can drive there in around fifteen minutes. 

Out on the Deck

Escape to your own piece of tranquility at this charming lakeside haven. Tucked away amidst trees and meadows, this cosy fisherman's house offers a blissful retreat for nature lovers seeking serenity. With a main house and outbuilding, you'll have plenty of space to relax and unwind. Step inside the bright and inviting living area, featuring a Scandinavian wood stove and satellite TV. The well-equipped kitchen is ideal for preparing home-cooked meals, while the comfortable bedrooms provide restful nights. Outside, enjoy the beautiful lake views from the veranda or indulge in a BBQ on the terrace. Take advantage of the shared natural state property and cooling off at the bathing jetty. Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities nearby. Whether you're seeking a peaceful escape or an outdoor adventure, this lakeside oasis is sure to rejuvenate your spirit.

Cozy Lakeside Haven

We adore the incredible views of the water from this retreat on a private archipelago. Relax on the patio with a filmjölk in the morning – the rooftop terrace has beautiful vistas. Later, go for a refreshing swim from your private dock, or take the free stand-up paddleboards out on the water. You can hire a boat from your lovely host too and go fishing or have a kick around on the soccer field. As the sun sets, enjoy a glass of snaps and fire up the pizza oven and savour an alfresco meal, or let a private bartender and chef cater for your dinner party. Inside, the stunning landscape can be relished from the sofas in the bright, stylish living space. There's even a separate one-bedroom guest house for those seeking more privacy. A ferry to the mainland and Downtown Stockholm leaves approximately every hour from right outside the villa and takes around twenty minutes. Here you can head to the Swedish Museum of Natural History and ABBA The Museum or visit the Royal Palace.

Looking For Water

This contemporary penthouse overlooking central Norrmalm is a place to stop you bang in your tracks. A homage to modern design, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sleek finishes expertly fuse together over two floors of utter luxury. Head out onto the vast terrace, where unobstructed panoramic views of Stockholm's skyline spread out before you. With different zones for lounging and a barbecue, you could easily watch day turn into night from here. Back inside, there's a dining and kitchen space made for action with Smeg appliances, so you're all set to host a glamorous dinner party. Or let a professional chef and mixologist take care of the meal and cocktails; your host knows the person for the job. In the bedrooms, expect crisp white linens and those jaw-dropping views again – we'll leave you to decide who lucks out on the master bedroom with en-suite steam and sauna shower. And should you ever be tempted to leave this home, you'll find bustling street life unfolding right on your doorstep, with a myriad of shops, cafes, and restaurants close by and two subway stops, Rådmansgatan and Hötorget, just five minutes away on foot. The lovely Humlegården park is just around the corner (eleven minutes on foot), too – the perfect green oasis to escape the bustle, if just for a while.

The Sky's the Limit

A stone’s throw away from the rocky beaches of Kemiönsaari, this snug home is perfect for a couple or small family. Start your day on the wooded private porch and just breathe in the crisp air, before walking to the lakeside for a day of fun in southern Finland. Kasnäs harbour is a short walk with its boats for rent, ferries across the sea, and grocery shop for supplies. Inside the home you have every modern comfort (think Netflix and wifi). The home is part of a larger complex where you can use the communal sauna and lounge, as well as the shared barbecue area surrounded by trees. In the evening, sit by the fire pit and swap stories, or head indoors where comfortable furnishings, a sleek kitchen, and a chic blue and grey colour palette makes for a stylish holiday abode. 

Lake Escape

This cosy Finnish apartment would suit anyone looking for a true escape into nature. On the edge of the Hitis archipelago, there's much for sporty travellers to enjoy here, whether you want to discover the hiking trails or take a boat ride to the nearby islands. This recent build is full of contemporary Finnish style, from the EcoFurn furniture on the terrace to the cosy throws and rugs, and there's plenty of space to unwind in the living space after a day of exploring. You'll find all you need in the kitchen to prepare meals, while the dishwasher makes cleaning up a breeze. Venture down to the communal lakeside sauna to unwind, or just relax in the private sauna in your home. As the sun sets, settle down on the terrace with a cup of hot chocolate and your favourite album on the Bluetooth speaker – or, strike up a conversation with fellow adventurers at the communal barbecue area. 

Secluded Peninsula

Mornings out on the lake, surrounded by breathtaking natural views and evenings chatting over dinner with loved ones are just two ways of experiencing the tranquility of this home. Indoors, you’ve got a fully-fitted kitchen, a fireplace, a sauna and an open-plan living room with patio doors opening up to the pier and offering easy access to Lake Karhijӓrvi. The lake is rich in fish, so why not catch your dinner and cook it up on the lakeside barbecue. As night falls, settle into the sofas with dessert for some quality time in front of the television. Your private sauna is always free for a good detox before bedtime.

In The Moonlight

Whether you're sweating it out in this home's private sauna or curled up with a book watching the snow fall on the pine trees, this home is a modern take on the traditional wooden lodge. Set in the heart of Lapland and a 10-minute drive from Ylläs ski resort, this spot has got everything needed for fabulous group holidays. When you're not hitting the slopes, there are sledges for exploring the woods, or during summer jump into the nearby lake, just five minutes away by car. The long evenings can be spent relaxing on the balcony on the home's wicker furniture, watching the endless twilight glow - we recommend stocking up the modern white kitchen with plenty of drinks and snacks and making a night of it. During winter, the living room fire will keep you cosy, and you can watch the snow fall through the double height windows.  

Reindeer's Reach

Wake up to frosted Nordic spruces and falling snowflakes glittering on the horizon when staying in this semi-detached cabin in Kolari. With wood-panelling inside and the Alpine forests surrounding you, you won't see the wood for the trees sat on the covered terrace with a cup of coffee; a fully immersive forest experience.  Bring along a pair of cross-country skis (there’s a shared drying room for storage) and explore the snow-blanketed trails on your doorstep. As you are in Lapland, try to spot a reindeer or even arrange a husky sleigh experience. The ski lift to the slopes of Äkäslompolo is less than 10 minutes drive away. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s a little wooden fire-pit hut in the garden so you can spend the evening amongst the trees, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon. 

Lapland Lights

If going solo is more your vibe, the cabin has a private electric sauna, a sleek kitchen where you can make yourself some dinner and a picnic-style table in the dining area that's perfect for a snug family meal.
