Steeped in over a hundred years of history but looking modern enough to have stepped out of a design catalogue, this home combines old and new to create a comfortable space for families. The back garden has seating for everything from alfresco meals to reading in the egg chairs. Though it's a little further from the sights – walk to the Colosseum in fifty minutes or take public transport in less time – the distance makes it more peaceful. Still, you can get to all of Rome's best bits. But be aware that if you're walking, the hill back up to the house might not be kind to tired legs.
