Vetted by our experts

Smacking of old school charm, this traditional shingle-style home is an East Hampton hideaway. Knocked-through walls and a lack of doors create a huge, open-feel living space downstairs, with room to play a game of chess on the brightly tiled table or whip up something delicious in the chef's kitchen. If you do want a bit of privacy, there are two further lounges in each of the master bedrooms. Bookcases stuffed with interesting reads, a record collection, and quirky artwork give the home a lived-in vibe, with several sofas and dining areas to hang-out and discuss the day's plan. Borrow the home's bikes and cycle the half-mile to Wiborg Beach – or for those who fancy a challenge, try out the surfboards. If that all sounds a little strenuous, lounge by the heated saltwater swimming pool or soak in the jacuzzi bathtub, with views over the neighbouring nature reserve.

Melville’s Moby Dick makes a few references to this historical harbour, and its strong maritime roots and whaling past give this town its relaxed seaside feel. Today you’ll find sailboats and even yachts in the marina, but Sag Harbor’s streets still harken back to its 18th...
