Cranbrook and Hawkhurst are two of the most idyllic places in the Weald, and we can't think of a better way to sample rural British life than from a converted barn like this. There's a real sense of history to the open-plan ground floor, with its stone and timber-framed walls and an ornate wooden dining table. The plush leather armchairs and sofa are strategically placed for you to curl up around the crackling wood burner stove. The space is well-lit, too, thanks to the large glass doors leading to the sunny, flower-filled back garden. Spend your days exploring the British countryside in this area of outstanding natural beauty or discover the historic market town of Cranbrook, a five-minute drive away. Keen gardeners, on the other hand, can head to Sissinghurst Castle Garden – the spectacular grounds were created by Vita Sackville-West, poet and writer, and her husband, the author Harold Nicolson (nine minutes in the car).
