If character and timeless styling is your sort of thing, you've just found your dream Montauk farmhouse. Set on a typically leafy road, backing onto woodland but just a five-minute drive from the famous sandy beaches, it's a delightful, historic home built in the traditional style. Its wood-shingled exterior and wraparound porch are about as charming as they come, plus it comes with four acres of land to explore. Inside, it's been beautifully updated in keeping with its roots, with hardwood floors, comfortable furnishings and plenty of wall art. The high ceiling and fireplace in the living room give it an authentic period feel, and an eclectic mix of modern and vintage furniture keeps everything on-trend. We love the room's triple aspect, overlooking the lawns, the deck and the drive. There's a practical and homey kitchen and two quiet, calm main bedrooms – a third can be used as a bedroom, a study or an upstairs snug. The chances are you'll be coming here to enjoy some time in the great outdoors, and here it's a pleasure to sit out on the deck – either on the sun loungers, the Adirondack chairs or at the outdoor dining table. You'll have a gas grill for alfresco feasts, vast lawns to play on and even an open-air shower to wash the sand off your feet after a day on the beach. You'll find the nearby golf course, the lighthouse, state parks and all of Montauk's great shops and restaurants just a short drive away.

Often nicknamed “The End of the World” or “Manhattan on the Rocks,” Montauk is geographically isolated but certainly worth the trek. With a rustic and nautical charm, a working lighthouse and six state parks that range from nature preserves to rolling dunes, getting outside is the...
