Found on an acre of property, this 1885 manor house was built around fifty years after the log cabin that originally served as the Grundy County Courthouse in 1848. With the log cabin still standing, you get to experience a piece of Altamont history whenever you pass it by on your daily walks around the vast, green grounds. The manor itself had been listed on the State & National Historic Registry and was known as the largest and grandest brick home in the county – it definitely still has that air of grandeur now. Stately and elegant, you might get lost in your own Jane Austen daydream as you wander the halls, tracing the floral wallpapers with your fingers as you appreciate the history between these walls. Four poster beds, clawfoot tubs, chandeliers, and heavy wood furnishings all invoke a sense of the old, and it might even feel as though you have travelled back in time, but the modern fixtures will pull you back into the 21st century. Enjoy cooking together in the spacious kitchen and then gathering in the dining room to eat, drink, and be merry. Barbecue on the porch, or simply sit out with a glass of whiskey as you wind down after a day out exploring Altamont or hiking the local trails.
