This family home is all substance and style in a trendy western suburb of London. First of all, we love the book-filled living room with ming vases and object d’art adding a personal feel to the forest-green dresser. Big windows bathe this place in natural light. There’s a desk in here (and another in the second bedroom) for those that need to work remotely, and a collection of wines on display for a post-work wind-down. 

A wall of glass doors leads to the private patio garden, providing a lovely sun spot for those wishing to sit out and unwind long into the balmy summer evenings. Back inside, the dine-in kitchen is bright and sunny and the bathroom has a tub for a soak at the end of the day.

In terms of neighbourhood, you’re in leafy-green Chiswick – an affluent area with a friendly village-like feel, offering elegant eateries and a whole plethora of classy cafés and designer boutiques along the High Road. A fifteen-minute walk across the Kew Bridge sees you at the sprawling botanic gardens, while you can join the Thames River Path for a traffic-free stroll or cycle in just five minutes (your host kindly provides two bicycles for guest use). Hop on the Tube at Kew Bridge, a five-minute walk away, and be in the centre of London in around fifteen minutes.

Ambling along the River Thames, just a stone’s throw away from this modern apartment, you’d be momentarily excused for forgetting you were in the heart of West London. Yet turn a corner, and you’ll find the snug pubs and a bustling high street of Brentford. The attention to detail in this home is evident from the moment you arrive. We love how it has maintained a lot of the original features of the Grade-II listed building it is housed in, such as the sash windows and bedroom shutters. The interiors are very attractive with nods to mid-century design, which complement the period features for an elegant look. The location here won’t be for everyone, as the immediate area is lacking in attractions. But, you do have access to an allocated parking space and the train service into London Waterloo is frequent.

Close to upmarket Kensington and bohemian Notting Hill is the charming area of Brook Green. Known for its village atmosphere, period architecture and excellent transport links (Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road and Shepherds Bush stations are all within walking distance), this pocket of West London suits families, business travellers and those craving a quieter neighbourhood. Yet it's still close to excellent restaurants, cosy gastropubs, green spaces and plenty of shopping, with Westfield London (fifteen-minute stroll), Kensington High Street (twenty-minute walk) and Holland Park (thirty minutes on foot) all just a stone's throw away. This bright apartment in a picturesque mansion is the perfect place to rest your feet and recharge after a long day exploring. The fully-stocked kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal, while the cosy living area has a comfortable sofa, Freeview channels and DVD player for chilled nights at home. There's also a desk if you need to do some remote working, though we'd probably get distracted watching the world pass by outside the window. But our favourite feature is the sumptuous rolltop bath. We can't think of a better way to end the day than with a glass of wine, a good book and a relaxing soak. Pure bliss.

Barnes is one of London's most coveted neighbourhoods and it's homes like this that show you why. The Georgian townhouse is one of the oldest in Barnes Village — named as such since the area is bordered on three sides by the River Thames and parkland on the final side — although the interior is as modern as they come. Downstairs, the teal walls and dark brown floorboards make for an opulent canvas against which the varied artwork collection, marble kitchen surfaces and patterned ottoman stand out. As well as an additional living room geared towards movie nights, guests will also find a small patio filled with plants at the back of the property and a balcony with a view of the river. Keen gardeners will love it here – the house is just a three-minute stroll to the Lion Gate, one of the entrances to Kew Gardens. If that wasn't enough, your lovely hosts provide four free tickets to the gardens, and this membership also gives you 10% off the shop there. There are plenty of chic boutiques, restaurants and bars on your doorstep to sample. Or, go for a walk along Richmond Riverside and explore Richmond Park. You can reach Central London in thirty minutes by Tube or train too. 

Back at this home, enjoy a cup of tea in the garden with its pretty flower borders, or relax on the sofa in the living room and pick a book from the shelf. We love the French doors, which allow light to flood in, as well as the neutral hues enlivened by pops of blue and green.
