Inside, the natural tones of slate, leather, stone and wood evoke a classically Scandinavian feel, and the high vaulted ceilings give a real sense of light and space. Whether winter or summer, the woods are a joy to explore, and the nearby lake is perfect for a summer swim. This home comes with the option of hiring a canoe for lake adventures, or skinned skis for wintery trails dusted with snow. Whatever the season, the sauna will be a welcome relief for tired muscles and a great way to unwind after a day out in the great outdoors.

Start your day with a wild swim before cosying up next to the fireplace with a coffee in hand. As you sit under the vaulted ceiling in the sitting room, look out of the large picture windows that perfectly frame the stunning scenery beyond. Adults and children alike will enjoy playing on the sandy beach in the summer, while the snowshoes and sleds are a welcome addition during the winter months. For a truly special evening, dine al fresco under the northern lights by gathering around the dining table on the decking, before heading to the fire pit to toast marshmallows. Absolute bliss.

After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the in-house sauna, before whipping up a comforting meal in the sleek kitchen. In the evening, snuggle up with your family on the couch in front of the fire for a movie night. Or head back out to the balcony with a glass of wine, and take in views of the lush forests for which the land of the midnight sun is famous, and keep a look out for the northern lights.

Powder Fresh

This Kittilä cabin is the epitome of wilderness chic. Made up almost entirely of logs, you’ll find fur-lined seats next to an exposed stone fireplace in the living room. The wall art is a reminder of the reindeer that roam the evergreen Lapland forests in the area. Step out the front door and explore this tranquil wilderness on the sledges and scooters at hand. Or head out for a day of skiing at nearby Levi, which is one of Finland's most popular ski resorts – spend a day on the slopes knowing there’s a drying cabinet back home for all your wet gear. After a day of adventures, relax your muscles in the in-house sauna or get some shut-eye in one of the three cosy bedrooms. Though the setting is rustic, you’ll still have access to a few key modern comforts – there’s a TV with Chromecast and the host has provided a tablet with wifi for those who need to quickly check in with the office. 

White Reindeer

Experience Finland at its very finest in this log cabin nestled away amongst the trees near Ruka and three kilometres from the nearby lake. Perfect for visiting in both summer and winter, this large split-level home is surrounded by stunning Finnish countryside. Look in any direction and you’re met with views of vast woodlands, while inside, the home provides a warm and cosy welcome to weary travellers. The double-height kitchen and dining space create a sense of occasion for family feasts, and the cleverly positioned log burner ensures that both the dining room and living area are kept nice and toasty in the winter. Convivial and light, the open-plan space opens onto the wrap-around terrace - perfect for letting the outdoors in and sitting out and admiring the scenery as dinner cooks on the barbecue. After a day on the slopes or an afternoon hike, rest and recharge in the sauna before settling in for a movie night in the lounge or the TV nook tucked up on the mezzanine level. And speaking of hikes, you’ll be just four kilometres away from the summer hiking trails of Valtavaara where you can really take in the breathtaking surrounding landscape. Winter visitors will also find plenty of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails nearby, and Ruka is home to the nearest ski resort with plenty of ski runs and a ski school, all just a short drive away.

The Cabin in the Woods

Chancing across this cute-as-a-button log cabin in the depths of winter, you might feel like you’ve stumbled into a fairy-tale. With walls made of jumbo logs and a thick blanket of snow on the roof, it’s got magic written all over it. Inside it’s as cosy as can be, with an open fire, animal pelts and contemporary furniture that contrasts perfectly with the rustic architecture. Three extra beds in the balcony area give options for families and friends sharing an enchanting break, and there’s a sauna for the full Finnish experience. You’re within walking distance (20 minutes) of Levi Centre, so you can ditch the car if you’re happy to stay local. With ski slopes, snowmobile tracks and cross-country ski trails galore, we don’t see why you’d want to go anywhere else. 

Snow Kiss

There's no better place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life than this charming log cabin surrounded by towering Finnish pine trees on the banks of Lake Päijänne. Though the setting couldn't be more rustic, the interior is all about contemporary comforts. The glossy kitchen is completely modern and well-equipped for preparing family meals, best enjoyed around the large dining table, while the living area offers plenty of cosy seating to curl up on, a flat-screen TV to keep you entertained and a crackling fireplace that's ideal for chilly evenings. Even when you're inside you can make the most of the scenery, thanks to the huge windows showcasing the woodland views. Spend your days in the great outdoors – go for a dip in the lake, take the rowboat out for a spin, do a spot of birdwatching from the expansive deck or explore the nature trails and interlinked islands at Päijänne National Park. When your feet are sore, relax in the private Finnish sauna or take a soak in the hot tub, which you can rent all year round.

Into The Mystic

Wake up to frosted Nordic spruces and falling snowflakes glittering on the horizon when staying in this semi-detached cabin in Kolari. With wood-panelling inside and the Alpine forests surrounding you, you won't see the wood for the trees sat on the covered terrace with a cup of coffee; a fully immersive forest experience.  Bring along a pair of cross-country skis (there’s a shared drying room for storage) and explore the snow-blanketed trails on your doorstep. As you are in Lapland, try to spot a reindeer or even arrange a husky sleigh experience. The ski lift to the slopes of Äkäslompolo is less than 10 minutes drive away. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s a little wooden fire-pit hut in the garden so you can spend the evening amongst the trees, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon. 

Lapland Lights

This idyllic waterside home’s timeless interiors are inspired by nature, with pale wood tones and pops of forest greens. Thanks to the large picture windows, you can enjoy views through the trees and down to the water from almost every room. And of course, no Finnish abode would be complete without a sauna. With its magical setting on the shores of Lake Pielinen, we imagine wonderful summer days just messing about on the water. This delightful wooden cottage has its own rowing boat, as well as a grill hut with views of the lake. Later on, stargaze from the outdoor Jacuzzi with a glass of Lakka liqueur. If you tire of exploring nearby, there’s the rest of the Koli National Park to discover. What’s more, there are plenty of skiing and snowshoeing opportunities during colder months – you may even spot the Northern Lights. Spend some time here, and you’ll get to see why this has been voted the happiest country in the world.

Nordic Waterlily

With its clean lines, monochrome interiors and pine tree views, this new cabin on Finland's Lake Oulujärvi is throwing out some seriously cool Scandi vibes. Set just metres from the water, the home is a peaceful retreat from the stresses of day-to-day life. The open-plan living space is perfect for groups to gather, whether it be on a modern rocking chair in front of the fire or at the sleek white dining table. In summer, lake swimming is the order of the day – there are even two rowing boats for exploring the bays. If you need to warm up, jump in the traditional lakeside sauna and sweat it out in true Finnish style. In colder months, a snowmobile and sleigh can be rented from the owner, though we won't blame you if you prefer to stay warm on one of the sofas, watching the snow fall through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Snow Tracks

Go fully remote and get deep into the wood cabin vibes at this Finnish home. This lakefront house is surrounded by towering trees and scenic views, making this the perfect nature retreat to decompress and unwind. As if straight out of a movie set, the hanging chair, front yard patio, brick chimney and fire-engine-red exterior sets the picture-perfect scene. The interiors combine a mix of white furnishings with dark and light wood fixtures, maintaining the home’s rural identity. The country-chic kitchen is warmed by a traditional brick stove and the TV room is tucked away in a little nook. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake, diving off your own wooden jetty and drying off on loungers in the sun. Perhaps take the home’s boat for a spin and catch your own dinner for a barbecue on the front porch. Life out on the lake is serene, but if you crave a little civilisation, Somero town centre is 9km away, where you’ll find ice hockey rinks, bowling and plenty of local restaurants. 

Take The Boat Out

Enter into the height of hygge living with this cosy cabin on the sprawling banks of Lake Solojärvi. Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. We love the timber-heavy interiors, striking fire and sliding glass doors that offer views of the picturesque landscape all around – as if you'd need reminding. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.
