Swing, London
KELLY & MICHAEL
Kelly, a photographer and her husband Michael, who’s
the founder of Exploration Architecture, who specialise
in Biomimicry present their apartment, Swing.
Michael, who believes in finding natural solutions to
architecture and influencing his expertise in biomimicry
into his designs has put his experiences into this
Shoreditch apartment. A recent article in The FT talks
about this biological approach to architecture in more
depth and also features this apartment.
Purchased in 1996, Kelly & Michael completely stripped
back the industrial space to its bare structure and created
a beautiful open plan living space. They’ve maximised
use of natural light coming through the large warehouse
windows and decorated it with iconic design classics and
unique art pieces.
Kelly and Michael’s favourite piece in the apartment is
the solid wooden dining table. The centre piece of the
apartment was put together using joists removed from
the stage of the Royal Court Theatre in 1990. Some of
Britain’s most famous actors have walked on those
joists and you have the opportunity to enjoy a cup of
tea on it now.
