The best neighbourhoods in Lisbon

Alfama

The oldest quarter of the city, Alfama has a unique Morrish charm and a pedestrian village feel. Whether you want to pay a visit to the Castelo de Sao Jorge, listen to fado music at the old-world eateries, or climb the steep alleys for sweeping views, this is Lisbon at its most authentic.

Baixa

Baixa is a great base for sightseeing. In the heart of the historic centre (or Bario Alto), you'll never be too far from the bustling Praça do Comércio, the scenic riverfront, or the iconic Santa Justa Lift. Many bars and restaurants are nearby, too. It can be busy with tourists, but that only adds to the vibrant atmosphere.

Belém

Fancy being by the water? Head to Belém, famous for its namesake tower jutting into the Tagus River. Although you'll need to hop on a bus or train to visit the centre, this neighbourhood is packed with attractions and maritime history. Make sure to swing by the famous pastry shop that's been making pastels de nata since 1837.

With its Roman ruins, medieval towers and historic treasures, Lisbon is one of Europe’s oldest cities – and trust us, there are plenty of things to see, do, and explore.

Your first port of call should be Sé de Lisboa, the oldest church in the city. After admiring the Gothic architecture, enjoy the lively atmosphere in nearby Bairro Alto, Chiado, and Baxia. The famous Pink Street is a hub of nightlife, where colourful umbrellas hang overhead, and cafes and bars spill into the streets. End your evening listening to live fado music in Alfama, one of the most unique things to do in Lisbon.

The vintage yellow tram cars are among the most exciting ways to explore the city. They chug up narrow alleys flanked by colourful façades, offering fantastic viewpoints – ideal if you don't feel like climbing the city's many hills.

Get out on the water with a cruise along the Tagus River, or spend a day on the sandy beach in Cascais. The magical town of Sintra isn't far by car and is perfect for a day trip. Whether you're travelling solo, as a couple or with friends and family, Lisbon has something for everyone – and Plum Guide has the vacation home for you.
