Centro Storico

Otherwise known as the historic centre of Rome, this is the place to stay if you want to be in the heart of the city. All the major monuments – including the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona – will be at your fingertips here. We think this is the best option if if it’s your first time visiting the Eternal City.

The best things to do in Rome

A trip to Rome is anything but boring. From must-visits like the Vatican and Colosseum to sampling Italian wines and cuisine, you'll never run out of things to see and do in the Eternal City.

Plum Guide's favourite things to do in Rome

Start by ticking the iconic landmarks off your bucket list. Even if you're not a history buff, you'll be enthralled by the ancient artefacts in the Roman Forum and Colosseum. The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican is another can't-miss. One glance at Michelangelo's awe-inspiring fresco and you won't mind the long queues. Tossing a coin (or three) in the Trevi Fountain is a rite of passage on a trip to Rome. It's also close to the Spanish Steps, another popular attraction.

Passionate about art? Rome overflows with museums, galleries, and collections. Galleria Borghese features sculptures by Bernini and Canova, Villa Farnesina is home to elaborate frescoes by Raphael, and MAXXI offers an ultramodern look at 21st-century works.

The best way to explore is on foot. Take it slow and wander around the charming neighbourhoods, stopping at the many pavement cafes and browsing the artisan shops. The famous Roman outdoor markets are also worth a look. Campo de’ Fiori is the oldest, known for for its flowers, produce, and the 1943 film named after it.

The weather in Rome – when's the best time to visit?

No matter what time of year you visit Rome, you'll be in for a treat. It's Mediterranean climate is generally warmer and sunnier than other European countries. The hottest month of the year is July, which coincides with the bustling tourist season, and August isn't far behind. Temperatures can reach as much as 30°C – factor in high humidity, and sightseeing during summer can be stifling and scorching.

Winter ranges from 13°C to 2°C, with the lowest temperatures occurring at night. The coldest months tend to be January and February. Rain is most common in November and December – and, on average, the precipitation levels are higher than London's. Outside of the Christmas period, winter tends to see the lowest number of tourists.

We think the best time to visit Rome is during the shoulder season – spring and autumn. Weather is generally pleasant – warmer than winter, cooler than summer – and many vacation crowds have flown home for the season. Autumn is wetter than spring and can be nearly as busy as summer, but the crisp air, changing leaves, and beautiful sunsets make it a good time to explore. Spring is when the city is in full bloom. If sipping wine in the sunshine is your idea of a good time, this is the prime time to visit. Just avoid travelling during Easter (roughly a week before and after), as this is when Rome has a large number of visitors keen to experience Easter masses and vigils.
