Perched above a valley in Lunigiana – the so-called Land of a Hundred Castles – this villa commands sweeping views across forested hillsides to the medieval Castello di Castiglione del Terziere. Outside, the infinity pool makes the most of the panoramas. A wisteria-draped pergola and an alfresco dining table are ideal for meals and sundowners, while inside, oak beams lend the living spaces real character. A games room with a billiard table adds a layer of relaxed comfort, and each bedroom opens to the outdoors. Surrounded by chestnut woodland and centuries-old olive trees, the grounds alone are worth exploring. But further afield, Pisa, Lucca, and the beaches of Lerici and Marina di Massa are perfect for day trips.

Home truths
The pool is open from the last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in October – if you're visiting outside those dates, you won't be able to use it.
Each floor connects directly to the outside as well as via an internal staircase, so the layout feels open and spread across the hillside.
If you're travelling with little ones, your host can arrange a cot and high chair. You'll need to request them in advance.
You'll need a car to make the most of this hillside location. The villa sits in a rural area of Lunigiana, with the coast and local towns a drive away. There's a covered garage with two parking spaces, plus more space on the driveway.
