From the outside, this historic townhouse doesn't look at all out of place on a canal in Cannaregio, one of Venice's most authentic neighbourhoods. Inside, however, things are strikingly modern, from the Italian designer furniture to the pastel-coloured walls. The two apartments that make up this home are alike in style, and both enjoy outdoor space – though you'll likely find yourself gathering for meals and drinks in the peaceful garden over the upstairs balcony. Bars and cafes line the nearby streets, still undiscovered by tourists, but it's just a ten-minute walk to the San Marcuolo vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal.

These days, it’s generally less crowded and has more of a traditional, laid-back feel to it, far removed from the tourist thoroughfares south of the Grand Canal. Venice's dwindling population is a well-known problem, but here you...
