Perched three storeys above Isle of Palms on South Carolina's Atlantic coast, this palm-fringed villa is the ideal spot for a group vacation. The 800 sq ft rooftop deck is the centrepiece – panoramic ocean views stretch to the horizon, making it a natural place to gather when the sun goes down. In the garden, a private pool and super-size hot tub with waterfall jets will make it hard to leave, while four covered porches offer quieter spots to settle into the day. A basement games room with pool table keeps everyone occupied when the mood calls for it – but the beach itself is barely two minutes away on foot.

As with any coastal setting, natural erosion can affect the size and accessibility of the beach from visit to visit, and high tides can temporarily reduce or cut off access to the shoreline. This is part of life on a barrier island and not something the host can control or offer refunds for.
