Tucked inside an 18th-century observatory on Calton Hill, this apartment might be the most characterful address in Edinburgh. Step out onto the private terrace and you're face-to-face with the Nelson Monument, the city's skyline stretching out behind it. Inside, a decorative fireplace and specially commissioned artworks give the living room real personality, while the marble bathroom – with its freestanding tub – makes the end of a long day feel like something of a ritual. The apartment sits at the top of Calton Hill, one of Edinburgh's most popular tourist spots, so you can expect a steady stream of visitors outside from early morning until late evening.
Getting here involves a steep uphill climb with steps – it's not suitable if you or anyone in your group has mobility issues, and arriving with heavy luggage takes some effort.
The apartment is on the lower ground floor with a ceiling height of 2 metres – cosy rather than lofty, and worth bearing in mind if that matters to you.
There is no washing machine in the apartment.
