Perched above Carnelian Bay on Lake Tahoe's North Shore, this house earns its hilltop position – floor-to-ceiling windows frame pine forest and lake views from the main living area, and the upper deck pulls you outside for alfresco dining with the water turning gold at sunset. A gas fire pit on the lower balcony keeps evenings going once the light fades. All three en-suite bedrooms open directly onto balconies overlooking the pines, and a lofted lounge above the kitchen gives larger groups room to spread out. Palisades Tahoe Resort is twelve miles away, Northstar thirteen – which makes this an easy base whatever the season.

Local guide
About Carnelian Bay
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
