Tucked among the pines at Northstar, this house is built for family ski trips where everyone – kids included – wants to be there. A bunk room with a built-in slide and dedicated play space keeps younger guests entertained, while separate living zones upstairs and downstairs mean grown-ups get their own breathing room. Mornings are easy with ski storage, boot warmers, and a free shuttle stopping at the driveway – Northstar Resort is right on the doorstep, though you'll need to pay for a resort pass to enter. Dogs are welcome too, with beds and bowls waiting on arrival. Downtown Truckee is a fifteen-minute drive when you need a change of scene.

Home truths

  • The lead guest must be at least 21 years old.

  • Due to this home's location, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay. There's parking for up to four cars in the driveway.

  • The barbecue and all outdoor furniture and amenities are only available between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so if you're visiting outside those dates you won't have access to the outdoor equipment.

  • There's no air conditioning here – the upper rooms in particular can warm up during summer, so bear that in mind if you're visiting in the hottest months.

  • Getting into the home involves a set of stairs at the entrance, with a second staircase connecting the mudroom to the upper level – worth keeping in mind if anyone in your group has mobility considerations.

  • Be aware that construction is a common occurrence at homes and roads in the Lake Tahoe area in the summer.

Local guide

About Truckee

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
