Tucked among tall pines outside Truckee, this six-bedroom house is built around a great room where exposed beams, wood-lined ceilings, and a stone fireplace make it easy to settle in after a day outdoors. The wraparound deck frames the forest at every hour – sunrise coffee or dusk drinks among the pines both work equally well. When you're ready to explore, downtown Truckee's craft breweries and mountain dining are just minutes away, Palisades Tahoe is roughly fifteen minutes out, and Lake Tahoe itself is under a thirty-minute drive.

Local guide

About Carnelian Bay

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
