Two living tree trunks rise through the double-height living room of this Whidbey Island house, making the forest feel like it's come inside rather than something you've left behind. Soaring ceilings and expansive windows keep the light pouring in, while the mezzanine main bedroom puts you level with the treetops come morning. Outside, an upper deck with a barbecue makes alfresco evenings easy, and the waterfront pool is a draw for warmer days. The beach is a three-minute drive away, with Coupeville Wharf's historic pier over Penn Cove a fourteen-minute drive further along the island.

You're on a naval air base flight path, so on a few weekdays each month – and occasionally in the evenings – you may hear loud aircraft during training exercises. The Navy typically publishes its schedule a week in advance, and training doesn't take place at weekends or on public holidays.
