Wrapped in timber and tall pines, this Sierra Nevada cabin is the kind of place where you can finally switch off. Rich wood panelling, a stone fireplace, and expansive windows framing the surrounding forest make the living room feel like a retreat in itself – the four-poster bedroom carries that same sense of being immersed in the trees. Step outside and you're directly on the Tompkins Memorial Trail, with over seventeen miles of hiking and biking on the doorstep, while Lake Tahoe's shores are a fifteen-minute drive away in summer.

Home truths
There is no air conditioning here, so summer stays rely on the mountain elevation and shaded forest setting to keep things cool. It's worth packing a fan if you sleep warm.
The driveway is steep – in winter you'll need a vehicle with four-wheel drive or chains to reach the home.
Outdoor furniture, sun loungers, and the barbecue are only available from Memorial Day through to Labor Day. If you're visiting outside that window, the decks will be clear but not set up for alfresco dining.
You'll need to be able to manage stairs here – it may not suit guests with reduced mobility.

About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
