Built for long evenings outside, this Mission Viejo house earns its keep in the backyard – a walled terrace with a built-in barbecue and bar seating, a fireplace, and string lights overhead that make it hard to go inside. The main en-suite bathroom is calm and well-considered, with a soaking bathtub and a reading chair by the window for quieter mornings. Laguna Beach's coves and art galleries are a twenty-eight-minute drive, and Dana Point Harbor – where whale migrations pass through the marina – is twenty minutes away. Southern California lake culture is closer still.
