Deep in the pine forest of Tahoe Donner, this cedar-warmed house is the kind of mountain retreat where it's hard to resist simply staying put. The vaulted great room, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows with the trees pressing in from every side, draws you in after a day on the slopes – as does the hot tub on the deck, ringed by towering conifers and crisp alpine air. When adventure calls, Donner Lake is about twenty-three minutes by car, and Sierra Nevada ski resorts are close enough for a proper powder day without an early-morning crawl.

Home truths
There's no air conditioning here, so summer stays will rely on natural ventilation from the surrounding forest. Opening windows in the evening helps, and nights at this elevation tend to cool down noticeably.
The barbecue and all outdoor furniture – including the hot tub and sauna decks – are seasonal, available from Memorial Day through Labor Day only. If you're visiting outside that window, plan accordingly.
At full occupancy, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in the office.

Local guide
About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
