A restored stone farmhouse in the Monte Amiata hills of southern Tuscany, this villa is the kind of place where the days slow down without any effort. Cypress trees frame the pool, the scent of herbs drifts up from the garden, and a covered stone pergola begs for long, unhurried lunches. Come evening, the fireplace in the first-floor living area earns its keep – especially welcome in the cooler months. The separate cottage gives a group within a group their own space, while host-produced wine and olive oil are on hand for anyone who wants to go properly local. Montalcino is around 10 km away.

Home truths

  • You'll need a car to stay here. The nearest restaurants and supermarkets are around 2.5 km away in Montenero or Sant'Angelo Scalo, and the wider region's highlights all require driving.

  • The main house has two distinct living levels – a ground-floor lounge and a first-floor kitchen and dining area – so meals and socialising involve moving between floors.

  • The cottage and main house are separate buildings, so guests staying in the cottage will need to step outside to reach the main house.

  • If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair. You'll need to request them in advance.

  • The swimming pool is only available for use between April and October.

  • While only three bedrooms and two bathrooms are photographed, expect the style and quality of the others to be consistent with the rest of the home.

  • The swimming pool isn't fenced.
