A cedar-and-stone lodge set among towering pines in Truckee, this house is built for mountain living at its most comfortable. Two fireplaces warm the main living areas, the main bedroom has its own crackling hearth, and when the snow settles, the deck transforms into something worth lingering over – pines dusted white, mountain views out beyond the rail. A wet bar and long communal dining table make evenings easy for groups, while an outdoor fire pit and barbecue extend the gathering space into the forest. Northstar California Resort is 5.5 miles away, with Donner Lake and Palisades Tahoe well within reach.

About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
