Tucked into the pine forests of Incline Village, this house earns its mountain retreat credentials in every room. The vaulted living room draws everyone in around the wood-burning fire on cool evenings, while the main suite takes things further – its cedar infrared sauna, steam shower, and private deck offering a restorative end to a day on the slopes. An elevated timber deck makes alfresco dining feel like eating among the treetops, and the six-person hot tub on the lower deck is hard to leave once you're in. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is a ten-minute drive away.

Home truths

  • There's no air conditioning here, so summer stays rely on natural ventilation and fans. If you're visiting during a warm spell, it's worth packing light layers for the evenings, when temperatures at this elevation tend to drop.

  • You'll need a car to get around – the nearest shops and ski resorts are a short drive away, and street parking isn't permitted. On-site, there's room for six vehicles: two in the garage and four in the driveway.

  • Four-wheel drive or snow chains may be necessary in winter – worth factoring in when planning your journey or hiring a vehicle.

  • The beaches in Incline Village are private and not accessible to you as a guest here. Kings Beach, around 4.4 miles away, is the nearest publicly accessible shoreline.

  • The gas barbecue on the upper deck is only available during the summer months, so if you're visiting in winter or shoulder season, you won't be able to use it.

Local guide

About Incline Village

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
