Built in 1953 and still carrying every bit of that era's character, this cabin on the quiet west end of Donner Lake is the antidote to the overdesigned mountain rental. Exposed ceiling beams and a loft sleeping area give it warmth that no amount of renovation could replicate. West End Beach – sandy shore, paddleboard rentals, roped-off swimming – is a six-minute walk away, while Sugar Bowl and Donner Ski Ranch are roughly a fifteen-minute drive up Old Highway 40 in winter. Evenings belong to the pine-framed deck and the barbecue.

About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
