Backing directly onto Tahoe National Forest, this Carnelian Bay house puts a year-round trail network – hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing – right outside the door. Inside, the main living room earns its place as the heart of the home: a fireplace, soaring windows, and pine trees pressing in on all sides. A wraparound deck extends the experience outdoors, while downstairs a games room with a pool table keeps things lively when the legs need a rest. Three major ski resorts, including Palisades Tahoe and Northstar, are within a twenty-five-minute drive, and Tahoe City's lakeside dining and boutiques are less than ten minutes away.

Home truths

  • This home is set over two floors, so you'll need to be able to climb stairs here. It might not be the best option for those with reduced mobility.

  • One of the bedrooms has a single-over-double bunk bed, along with an additional pull-out single bed. This room can sleep up to four people and might be best suited to children.

  • There's no air conditioning here – portable fans are provided for warmer days. If you're visiting in summer, it's worth planning accordingly.

  • You can park up to three cars here – one in the garage and two on the driveway. You'll need a car in this area, as the nearest beaches, ski resorts, and Tahoe City are all a drive away. If you're planning a winter visit, four-wheel drive or snow chains may be necessary to navigate the roads safely.

  • Note that charcoal grills are strictly forbidden in this county, so if you're planning alfresco cooking, you won't be able to bring or use a charcoal barbecue.

Local guide

About Carnelian Bay

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
