A cedar cabin tucked among the pines near Northstar, this house is built for mountain trips done properly. Come in from the cold and settle beside the fireplace in the timber-ceilinged living room – it's particularly inviting after a day on the slopes. The deck off the main floor puts you right in the forest, and a hot tub and sauna mean evenings are well catered for. Northstar California Resort is less than one mile away, with a free shuttle service close by, so the skiing is within reach.

Home truths
This home is set over three floors, so you'll need to be able to climb stairs here. It might not be the best option for those with reduced mobility.
Bedroom four has a single-over-double bunk bed that can sleep up to three people. It might be best suited to children.
There's no air conditioning here, so summer stays will rely on fans and cool mountain air to keep things comfortable.
Open fires and barbecues are not permitted here – county rules prohibit charcoal grills entirely, and there's no fire pit on site.
You'll have access to the on-site communal pool and gym here. They're shared with the resort's other residents.
If you're visiting in winter, be prepared for mountain road conditions. Four-wheel drive or snow chains may be necessary to reach the home safely, so check conditions before you set off.
There's free parking for up to three cars on the driveway and one in the garage.

About Carnelian Bay
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
