A mountain-modern house right in the heart of downtown Truckee, this is the kind of place where the evening begins around the fire pit under string lights and the afternoon drifts by from a sun porch with open views over the Sierra Nevada. Inside, the living space is bright and connected – cook while others gather by the fireplace, or retreat to the separate private office when work calls. A self-contained upstairs suite with its own kitchenette adds real flexibility. Shops, restaurants, and the Amtrak station are all within easy reach on foot.

Home truths

  • We recommend hiring a car for ease of getting around. There's driveway parking for four cars on site – spaces are uncovered, so factor that in if you're travelling in winter or need shade in summer.

  • If you're driving in winter, you may need a 4-wheel drive vehicle or snow chains to reach the home. Factor that into your transport planning if you're coming from further afield.

  • The Truckee Amtrak line passes close by, and the occasional train is visible and audible from the sun porches. Worth bearing in mind if you're a light sleeper.

About Truckee

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
