A private dock stretching over the Tahoe Keys sets this South Lake Tahoe house apart – you can watch boats drift past, cold drink in hand, or paddle out directly from your own waterfront. The dining room opens to water on three sides, so meals feel closer to being on the lake than beside it, and as evening arrives, golden light spills across the water in a way that makes the over-the-water deck impossible to leave. Back inside, a fireplace keeps mountain nights warm, and the main bedroom greets you each morning with arched windows framing the water.

Home truths

  • You'll need a car to get around. There are three uncovered parking spaces in the front driveway.

  • If you're visiting in winter, be prepared for mountain road conditions – 4-wheel drive or snow chains may be necessary even if it hasn't recently snowed.

  • The dock is private but has no open boat slip, so you won't be able to moor a motorboat. It's perfectly set up for launching kayaks and paddleboards, though.

About South Lake Tahoe

On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. Southern Lake Tahoe is where the majority of these activities (and the majority of the nightlife) is based. In contrast to the slower north, there's a bustling arts scene, late-night restaurants and plenty of casinos in Nevada.
