Tucked on a quiet cobbled mews in Kensington, this house spreads across three floors and works just as well for families as it does for larger groups. The top-floor living area opens through ceiling-to-floor glass doors onto a decked terrace – a good spot when the afternoon sun swings around. Gloucester Road Tube station is a seven-minute walk, putting the District, Circle, and Piccadilly lines within easy reach, while Kensington Gardens and the South Kensington museums are all on foot. A private garage is available by prior arrangement, which is a rare convenience in this part of London.

Home truths

  • There's no central air conditioning here – the hosts bring in portable units and fans during warmer weather, which guests have found helpful. If you're visiting in summer, factor in that cooling will be limited to those units rather than a whole-home system.

  • For those with reduced mobility, there's a ground floor bedroom and bathroom here.

  • Your host can provide a cot and high chair for little ones upon request.

  • If you're planning to use the garage for your car, you'll need to give at least one week's notice – the space is occasionally used by the host for storage. The usable dimensions are 4.6 metres long by 2.6 metres wide by 2 metres high, so it suits most standard-sized vehicles but may be tight for larger cars.

About Kensington

Affluent and incredibly central, Kensington is a great base for exploring London on foot. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are on your doorstep and so are the Victoria and Albert, Science, and Natural History Museums. The streets are attractive and well maintained (grand, white stucco facades aplenty) and your neighbours will be a wealthy, conservative set. Lots of positives but probably not the place to let your hair down.
