Civita di Bagnoregio is already one of Italy's most dramatic places to visit – but staying in a palazzo with more than 2,000 years of history is something else entirely. Once the ancient residence of the Colesanti family, its 15th-century façade, featuring a triple-arched window and stone lion sculptures, forms part of the village entrance. Inside, Roman columns and original architectural details hark back to the building's heritage. A walled garden overlooks the Valle dei Calanchi, while a rose-filled courtyard and a firelit dining room add to the character. Five characterful bedrooms, plus a wellness area adapted from a Roman cistern uncovered during renovations, make this a rare chance to stay in a piece of Italian history.

Home truths
Civita di Bagnoregio sits on an isolated plateau, connected to the outside world by a single pedestrian bridge. You won't be able to drive into the village, so you'll need to park at the base and walk across. Your host arranges luggage transport in advance by tractor, but it's worth keeping the practicalities in mind.
The palazzo spans six levels, including three internal levels of the house, the paved garden, the lower garden, and the cellar level. As there are several staircases, it won't suit those with limited mobility.
Civita di Bagnoregio is one of Italy's most visited hilltop villages, but the crowds thin out significantly after day-trippers leave in the evening. Staying here means you get the village largely to yourself after dark – the quiet alleyways at night are a real highlight.
Daily housekeeping is included with your stay.
