Tall pines, a stone chimney, and a timber exterior signal exactly the kind of mountain retreat you had in mind. Inside, the great room delivers – vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the forest doing the rest of the work. Six bedrooms spread across multiple floors keep a big group comfortable without crowding, while a downstairs media room and stocked board games handle rainy days well. When the sky clears, the back deck comes into its own – long enough for alfresco dinners at the grill, with a hot tub surrounded by trees. Lake Tahoe's North Shore is a fifteen-minute drive when adventure calls.

About Carnelian Bay
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
